The Extra Steps I Take When Publishing A Blog Post

For all bloggers to optimize their writing and skills to the highest level, there are multiple steps to take before and after publishing, to promote the post and gain the readership you deserve! It's so deflating when you receive no engagement on a post that took forever to write (I know that feeling), yet the work does not stop there. So, here are the four ultimate steps I suggest to do...

Double Check Your Writing

Before I schedule my post or hit publish, I make sure to re-read my whole post, to check for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and any other changes I can make. I usually try to do this a few hours after initially writing the blog post, and even better a few days. When I come back to it, I have a fresh mind, and spot mistakes I previously hadn't. It is also helpful if you have a second person to proofread your work, with a fresh perspective in mind. To prevent simple grammar mistakes, I recommend installing the programme 'Grammarly' onto your computer - it simply highlights any mistakes you have made and how to correct them. 


Check Photos

When previewing my blog post, I always like to check my photos. I like to make sure they have loaded properly, are the same width as the main chunk of text and are not blurry or grainy. Images are the first feature that people see when landing on your page, so having them correctly aligned gives the post a professional look. I only started doing this recently, and it has become so beneficial to the overall design of my blog. 


Tweet and Promote 

Once my post has officially been published, I immediately promote my post via social media, mainly on twitter. This platform is amazing for getting the initial readers of the new post, and gaining a continual flow of readers and traffic into the blog. I currently use HootSuite, to help me schedule tweets throughout the day - this platform is absolutely free - and is great to tweet old and new posts. I also recommend inserting some hashtags and accounts into each tweet, to increase the audience and readership of each tweet. My favourites include @femalebloggerRT@BBlogRT  and @GRLPOWRCHAT. Using this tip is so helpful to gain traffic and new followers, especially if you have a low initial following on Twitter. 


Pin on Pinterest

I don't think I have mastered the art of Pinterest in gaining traffic, but I always do pin photos from each post to again promote! I always pin to my 'On The Blog' board and then any other relevant boards, including the group blogger boards.

  1. Such a useful post! I didn't use Twitter for the longest time but I couldn't believe how much more views and engagement I got once I started. I try to follow all the steps that you've mentioned and also make my post as SEO-friendly as possible. It takes a little more time but can make a massive difference!

    1. All these steps definitely add time, but I tend to do all the 'admin' things in the morning or evening, and then whenever I have a free moment throughout the day. Scheduling definitely helps to reduce the time!!

  2. I dont pin my posts to pinterest because im really so confused by it! I dont usually recheck my spelling and grammar either which i probably should!

    1. If a post isn't perfect, then why post it? So, I always make sure I check everything and that I'm happy with it! If I wouldn't read the post, then my readers definitely wouldn't either.

  5. These are really good tips! I try to always double check my posts before publishing them, but never really thought about putting them on Pinterest. I don't know how that would work. But I might give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

    1. It doesn't harm trying to pin a few of your blog posts - especially if you join a few Pinterest groups. Even if it gains you only 10 views - it's something!

  8. Forever saying I need to figure out how Pinterest works! Yet to happen... Twitter is a huge source of traffic for me. It's crazy how long the 'extras' take sometimes x

    1. I am always trying to reduce the amount of time the 'extras' take, which is where the scheduling takes place. I usually set aside 10-15 minutes each morning and night to schedule tweets - this saves so much time!

  9. I use revive Old Post plug-in for WordPress to tweet my articles on intervals. I added a couple of hashtags but need to go in and check them. I was getting lots of retweets at first and none this week. I also make at least one usually two pins for Pinterest for each article. I'm thinking it's time to switch it up as comments on my site have been practically non-existent lately. I did much better when I joined link parties however the comments weren't turning into subscribers so not sure if that's a good strategy either.

    1. I agree with you. Some weeks, my retweets blow up, yet on others I get none (I need to figure out why). I also love joining the Twitter comment/link threads, which gets me instant traffic but maybe not traffic in the long-run...

  10. These are such great tips! I've only recently started using Grammarly, but its so helpful to make essential little tweaks! Promotion is so helpful too and I agree that Twitter is the best place for it!

    I have to make sure to double + double check that spelling.
    I have gotten a bit better, but sometimes I still notice silly mistakes after publishing. I hope my readers forgive me though.

  18. When I use Grammarly, I always think I'm a preteen again.. My colleague heard me griping in the break room one afternoon at work and turned me on to INK editor, I really enjoy how non meddling it is
